Today is one of those days, one of those posts, where I have too much to say. It’s more than this delicate crumb-topped peach pie can bear, I think. So instead of a more involved tale, I’ll say that I’ve been enjoying the some much-needed peace after a few weeks of freelance craziness. My work life was upended just a bit recently. I don’t know about you, but I’m a total birthday crier. On the eve of my fifteenth birthday, I sat on the floor of my dad’s house, looking up at a full summer moon and sobbing uncontrollably –– overcome by the passing of time and the fleeting number of hours we have on this planet, already nostalgic for all the time that had passed.

One Fourth of July long ago, I was holding a sparkler and running. Obviously, that was a bad idea, but I was five and kind of prone to bad ideas. As you might imagine, I tripped, fell on my face, and extinguished the sparkler with my torso. I was left with a sparkler-shaped scar on my lower abdomen, and not an ounce of remorse over the event. But, of my many nerdy pastimes, fire safety still looms large. That said, this Fourth––weather, humidity, and local laws permitting––I hope you will don some safety glasses, and set off some serious fireworks. It’s what George Washington would want you to do.
