Breakfast this morning was bittersweet. At the Farmer’s Market strawberry time is over, and I am sad to see them go. At least I have tomatoes.
4th of july
We had a few friends over for the fourth, even though we can’t see the fireworks from our apartment anymore. I am not going to let the condo boom stand in the way of a good time.
On the menu: simple guacamole, corn chips,
radishes with lemon and salt (recipe courtesy of LMK),
lemon cucumbers (fresh from the rooftop garden) served with a little bit of salt,
green bean and corn salad with chives and vinegar, cheeseburgers, mostly on brioche buns, not as crispy as Brian would have liked french fries, and homemade biscuits for strawberry shortcake (did I mention I love strawberrries?)
I particularly enjoyed the burgers; grilled and cooked to just medium rare. I also loved the tomatillo salsa. It was bitter and really satisfying.
The dinner was mostly a hit. I worked out some of the kinks in the biscuit recipe, although I apparently still have some work to do. Our three year old guest said of the biscuits, “They’re good, but not good enough.” Sigh. I did remember to time the whip cream whipping time and it was four minutes for enough cream to serve five.
After dinner we sat around and watched the reflection of the fireworks on the walls of all the new construction. Brian played some patriotic selections from his ipod. I feel confident when I say a good time was had by all.
