persimmon, pear, tangerine salad

Dear December, please slow down. I want to enjoy every second of pine needles, Christmas lights, candles, cinnamon, clementines and laughter. I want to cry to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and dance to “Christmas in Hollis” at least five more times. I want to bake cookies for the world, make my own eggnog, make my own holiday gifts, and wear something glittery for a night out on the town. But you, December, seem to have different plans and are rushing by at lightning speed, and I feel a little lost in your speedy wake. read more »

baked broccoli rabe

As winter finally settles on the city, and the seasonal menu shifts ever more toward rich meats, braises, and gratins, it’s a good time to have a few healthy sides at the ready. One such side is baked broccoli rabe. These distinctly nutty, vivid greens are the perfect counterpoint to some of the season’s richer foods, and creamy Asiago and plenty of garlic just sweeten the deal. read more »

hasselback sweet potatoes

And we’re off. After a slow start, and near denial, Thanksgiving preparations are well under way. The promised “flurry of posts” has not come to fruition, but I did want to check in briefly and wish you and yours safe travels and a very happy Thanksgiving.

I also wanted to share these simple Hasselback sweet potatoes with a spicy lime vinaigrette. Simple and satisfying, they are an excellent healthy sweet potato option. Thanksgiving aside, they’re also a great cold weather side.

pumpkin pie from scratch

Things have been pretty quiet around here. We said goodbye to our sweet pup Oscar last Friday, and since then I’ve been pretty blue. But the thing is, when you have two kids and a busy life, it’s hard to stop time and just be sad. The days when I could wallow in sadness, alternating between lounging in bed and long baths, are over. No matter what we’re feeling, lunch needs to be packed, people need to be picked up, dropped off, and life goes on. But amidst the hustle, there’s a stray hair, or a tennis ball rolling out from under the couch and my heart breaks all over again. read more »

apple pie in the apple

apple pie in the apple

The fall, where fresh, crisp apples abound, is something to savor. New York is home to many apple orchards with a focus on tasty heirloom and hybrid varieties, and all fall long we gobble up copious quantities of Cortland, Empire, McIntosh, Idared, and Fuji apples, to name a few. Saturday, Brain came home with two big bags of apples: Cortlands and Honey Crisps. They were the perfect inspiration for these apple pies in the apple.

The apple cups lend a lot of bite and flavor, and make for an adorable personal pie. To boot, a tiny round of (flaky, buttery) crust and a lightly sweet filling make these little pies a lot healthier than the classic version. Head over the Babble.com’s Family Kitchen for our recipe.

a bittersweet fall and apple chips

apple chips

Fall settles strangely here in the city. One minutes it’s warm, sunny, and the leaves are on the trees. Then suddenly, the winds pick up, the leaves turn and quickly fall off. Elsewhere, fall is a more gradual process with vibrant colors and fresh, bracing air. That’s why we always head out of town in October–to get a sense of our favorite time of year. But this year, things have been different. read more »
