Ha! 'Loose meat sandwich' is a terrible name, and it does bring back memories for me. Growing up in Iowa, these were popular sandwiches to make at home, or purchase at your local 'Maid-Rite'. Yes, people actually paid for what amounted to barely cooked ground beef and onions on a bun. The other Iowa standard, the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich, is much better. But your 'fancy joes' may beat them both!

Anna, that's really funny, I just heard about breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches this year when I had a friend who was trying to come up with an Indianapolis specialty for a Super Bowl Party and I read online that it was an Indianapolis thing but several people from there swore to me they'd never heard of it. It seems sort of German, so it makes a lot of sense for the upper midwest. Do you have a recipe?
